The series came about in response to the chaos and upheaval in the country and the world in recent years. The country experienced much turmoil and eventually went into war. Images of anger, pride and greed appeared to fill the media. Wondering if there was any good, any peace, any reason left in the world, Martinez was led to research and study the Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Cardinal Virtues. The conclusion the artist draws is that there is a balance that exists in the world, and therein may lie hope and resolution. The work was completed between 2003-04. Each image is a stage set of sorts. And the stage set is lined with characters. The curtain has been drawn. We are being introduced. Who Am I? Who are you? |
